The Rams Haven't Been In It For the Long Haul

When DP and I got married, one of our compromises was that when it comes to baseball, we were going to be STL Cardinals fans.  With football, we would be Dallas Cowboys fans.  Most years, this has worked out to be a good compromise.  This was not one of those years.

I was listening to ESPN Radio tonight (DP often listens to it and it was on when I got in the car) and heard this statistic: Since 1991, the St. Louis Rams have only had one head coach that lasted more than three years in the job.  That was Mike Martz (remember the last Rams coach to take the team to a Super Bowl?).

I wasn't really surprised by this, because it's long felt like the Rams are short on patience when it comes to their coaches.  And, surprise, surprise, after changing coaches repeatedly, in short order, they fired Steve Spagnuolo a few days ago.  Whether this was smart or not isn't for me to say.  As STL baseball fans saw with the departure of Albert Pujols, ultimately professional sports are all about the money.  Produce fast, or be gone.

If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, hoping for a different result, does the Rams management really expect to be in the playoffs next year?  There are so many factors that go into producing a winning team, wouldn't stability in the coaching staff be one of them?  It's not like hiring a Jeff Fisher or whoever they pick will be the missing piece that magically brings it all together and results in a championship right away.

Right?

So, will the next coach get the grace he needs to build a successful team?  Probably only if he can do it fast.
